National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day Proclamation

I was honored to be able to introduce this City of Maple Grove proclamation at the last city council meeting. Too many officers across the country have been lost to the evil and violence they are working to shield all of us from. They have experienced unspeakable things many of us will never have to think about. We owe them our respect and appreciation.

Thank you, Mr. Mayor. This is a motion to approve and proclaim May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day; and May 14 through 20, 2023 as Police Week.

May 15 is a day set aside for officers and the public to pay their respect and homage to those officers who have given their lives in the line-of-duty. Maple Grove Police Department is asking and encouraging our community members to honor Minnesota’s fallen officers by turning their porchlights to blue during National Police Week.

This is top of mind for many of us as the Maple Grove Police Department sent a contingent of officers and leadership to the funeral of Pope County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Owens who was killed in the line of duty, to pay their respects, along with the thousands of other Minnesota law enforcement professionals, just days ago. It’s a reminder that this is a dangerous job, no matter the size of the community or whether it’s urban, suburban, or rural. My colleagues and I take the service and sacrifices of each of our officers very seriously and we owe a debt of gratitude to each of you. Thanks for all you do.

With that, I’ll move to approve and proclaim May15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day; and May 14 through 20, 2023 as Police Week.

I am your neighbor who answers the call to service and works hard for you in many capacities.
