Meet kristy

Hello. I am Kristy Janigo.

I am your neighbor who answers the call to service and works hard for you in many capacities.

MY STORY

Because of my prior service in the US Army National Guard, and as the proud granddaughter of a WWII veteran, I am driven to advocate for the needs of military, prior service, and veterans to anyone who will listen. I have held various leadership positions at the Osseo Maple Grove American Legion. I cherish involvement in my faith community, Maple Grove Lutheran Church, where I am the Church Council Vice President, past volunteer coordinator, and help to lead worship as Assisting Minister. My husband Chip and I live in one of Maple Grove’s town house communities. I am the treasurer of my home owner’s association board.

I am a 2017 graduate of the Maple Grove Citizens Police Academy course, where I learned about law enforcement policies, training, equipment, and job functions. I first enrolled in the course to better understand an immediate family member’s job as a patrol deputy, and I would recommend the class to all residents. A nature lover, I have served on the Maple Grove Arbor Committee, advising city leadership on preservation of the urban trees and nature areas. I still join the Arbor Committee in the fall for buckthorn eradication in Forest Preservation Area B, which is a lot of physical labor but rewarding when you see all the piles of buckthorn removed! I have helped resident groups organize several community events to celebrate diversity last year, including Maple Grove’s first-ever pride parade, a breast cancer awareness event with the India Association of Minnesota, and a gathering to support Asian Americans after a rise in hate crimes and the mass shooting in Atlanta.

I am the Policy Director for Commissioner Kevin Anderson. My work for the commissioner has a special emphasis on transportation infrastructure and veterans’ issues for his district, which includes Maple Grove and 15 other cities. Before my recent career change to full-time government work, I was a product designer for Minnesota-based companies, completing several international business trips to visit factories in Asia and Central America.

I am a former academic department chair for a private art college with a diverse student body. I earned a Ph.D. in sustainable design from the University of Minnesota. My design research has been published in scholarly journals and once received a shout-out on the Netflix documentary Explained .
